Your Magic WHY
Today I'm going to speak about something that will help you stick to your ideals and keep you going, even if money is not flowing to you yet. It will help you keep your eyes on the prize. Something so dear to you, being part of you, your WHY.
WHY are you doing what you do?
What difference do you want to make in the world. My guess is that if you felt brave enough to quit the security of a corporate job it means that you knew you were meant for something bigger and better.
It took me a long time to understand this. I didn't understand why I wasn't like my friends who seemed happy to stick in their jobs! Instead I felt the need to change jobs every two years because I got bored and lost my motivation.
I now get it, it was not only a lack of motivation but the lack of purpose I felt from just earning a salary. I now understand that I wanted more and wanted to make a difference in the world through creating. I knew that if I stayed in what I would call a normal job it would never happen, and you too, might have felt exactly the same?
;When you set up in business you don't always understand why you do it; you just feel the urge, the longing to be free, have time to look after your children, create and make a difference into the world.
Today I encourage you to find your sweet spot, and why you do what you do.
From experience I can say that once you've found your "why" you will feel aligned with who you are. It's an absolutely wonderful feeling. It might take a while to get you there, but don't give up, continue searching, often we have to look at what is holding us back from finding our why. If you can't find your WHY, look at what's at stake if you get clear on it? Work backwards from there.
To help you can ask yourself these questions:
- If money was no object what would I do?
- Why do I get up in the morning?
- What motivates me?
- How do I to make a difference in the world
- How do I want to be remembered.
These questions might seem very personal, but your WHY will keep you going and it is also the heart of your personal brand. I encourage you to find your life and brand purpose because it will be your driving force when the going gets tough. We all know that the most successful people are the one's with grit!
As Simon Sinek says
Once you've answered these questions apply them to your brand,
- What is the essence of your brand?
- How does it make a difference to your clients?
- What is the purpose of your business?
i.e for me story telling is at the heart of everything I do. Your story is at the centre stage of a brand and what connects a brand with an audience. I want my visual story telling skills to help brands connect with their ideal audience.
Sometimes we're so focused on earning money, and I get the stress of being a freelancer, that we forget why we're doing it. Stop for a moment and ask yourself if money was no object would I still do that or something else? As a creative I encourage you to let go of the pressure of earning money. Of course continue to earn money for what you do but if it doesn't fulfil you look for new directions, continue creating for yourself. Ask the right questions.
Your mission this week :
- Start with WHY your business exists.
- Why are you serving clients? It was one of Steve's Job motto.
- Having a clear WHY will help differentiate yourself from other companies serving clients in the same field. It's the driving force behind your brand.
- Determine the what's and how's of your brand you will communicate on?
- What is your mission?
- How are you making a difference?
- Why do you create, produce?
- What do you believe in?
- What matters, what do you bring to the party?
